The
picture is prepared following a particular technique invented by the
artist in paper medium. The complete picture is mounted on wooden
surface and covered with glass in order to protect it from external
pressure, dust and moisture. Here 3 printed pictures of Shiva, Kali
and Durga of equal size(92cm x 62cm) are collected. Each picture
is vertically cut with 1cm breadth into 62pieces. As such a total
of 186 numbers of picture-pieces are pasted on paper surface and
rearranged to create the 3-D effect. The artist admits that he is
not the first man to prepare a 3-D picture where 3 different
pictures can be viewed from 3 different angles. In 1962,as a boy
of 12, he for the first time saw a 3-Dimentional picture, placed
on the sign-board of a shop in his native town Sambalpur to
attract customers. It depicted 3 great leaders of India, who can
be seen separately from the front, the left and the right. The picture seemed to have been made
up of tin or any hard material as it remained open and exposed to sun,
wind and rain for a long period. He liked to see it whenever he passed by.
After a gap of 20 years, he had almost forgotten it.
In early 1980s, the artist in his early 30s came across small
plastic plates chained to keyrings, which presented two cartoon pictures when
tilted to the left or the right; while he was working at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Puri
as an Art Teacher. This arose curiosity in his mind and his childhood
experiences danced before his eyes. He thought of making a 3-D picture, which
will present 3 pictures from 3 sides, in paper medium. As such in 1985, he collected 3 portraits of 3 sportmen of the size
22cmX16cm each from a sports magazine. Meanwhile he got transferred
to K.V. Sambalpur. In 1986, he cut those pictures into pieces and
reassembled them to create the 3-D effect. Though it was a success, it was a crude
one. Not satisfied, he took the pictures of 3 Prime Ministers of India of the
size 46cmX31cm each, and prepared a 3-D picture of a bit improved
variety. Then he prepared another 3-D work of same size taking pictures of 3 types
of animals. But he was not so happy. In the process of making these
pictures, he faced a lot of problems and tried to improve his technique.
In 1996, he thought of making a picture, 4-times bigger than the
previous picture and collected the pictures of Shiva, Kali and Durga of the
size 92cmX62cm each to make the 3-D picture of SHIV-SHAKTI. It is needless to say that he was not sure of success till the
completion of the work, because controlling of 186 pieces of long, tender and
slender papers of the size 92cmX1cm each posed a real challenge to him.
In fact the artist has not seen or heard of a 3-D picture made up of
paper only even till this day. He has not taken help or guidance from
anybody in marking this picture. Hence the technique involved is original.
